The Silver and the Cross

Kathleen Mulroy’s “The Silver and the Cross” is set in the 1890 silver mining town of Wallace, Idaho. Leora Brown and her minister father have relocated from sophisticated Boston to this small, remote town so that he may take the helm of a new church.
Edward Lycroft is an Englishman, a foreman in a silver mine, who immediately becomes infatuated by Leora; but disgruntled to learn her father is a Christian preacher. On the other hand, while attracted to Edward, Leora is troubled by his claim that he doesn’t believe in God. Leora knows her religious convictions are her life and fights to keep herself from becoming emotionally involved with this honest, good-natured, decent man. She pities Edward and prays for his soul.

What will happen across this chasm between Edward and Leora is the magic behind the well-chosen words of “The Silver and the Cross” Can these two lovers find some compromise or will each go a separate way?

This book is a quick read and should provide inspiration for those who feel God’s presence in their everyday lives.
